Its summer on the Outer Banks and with that comes the excitement and challenges of another tourism season. Recognizing the importance of mental health during this busy time, Our Epic Project made a $40,000 contribution to their EPIC Fund held with the Outer Banks Community Foundation. This week $30,000 in funding will be dispersed to local non-profits focused on supporting mental well-being in our community.

Supporting Mental Health Through Local Partnerships

The $30,000 in funding was divided among four organizations that serve the Outer Banks community in unique and impactful ways. Each group addresses mental health needs through programs designed for different populations, including residents, workers, and students. Here’s how the funding was allocated:

  • $15,000 to the Sound Minds Program via Interfaith Community Outreach

Sound Minds is a local program designed to connect residents with licensed mental health practitioners in the area. This program helps individuals find the right therapist for their needs, offering confidential, personalized support from professionals who truly care. Financial assistance is available via grants, including $5,000 dedicated to counseling services through the EPIC8 Program.

  • $10,000 to Dare Community Care Clinic’s Mental Health Program

Dare Community Care Clinic offers accessible mental health services to residents who might otherwise face barriers to care. The funding will help increase counseling availability and support services during the busy summer season.

  • $2,500 to NAMIOBX

NAMIOBX provides education, advocacy, and support for individuals and families affected by mental illness. This grant will help expand their outreach via the community program, Ending the Silence Youth Rally, to be held this fall on the Outer Banks.

  • $2,500 to the Wave Function Project

Summer is an exciting time for children. Camps, leisure, and time with friends are meant to be the norm. For children with certain disabling conditions however, when school ends, much of their social world pauses with it. Families, already carrying more than most people understand, are left without viable options for the kinds of experiences that typically-developing children enjoy every summer.

The Wave Function Project provides interactive summer programming for children and young adults with disabilities which may preclude them from enjoying more traditional camp experiences.

Why Mental Health Support Matters on the Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is a vibrant community with a unique rhythm shaped by tourism, seasonal work, and a diverse population. Summer brings an influx of visitors and seasonal employees, which can increase stress and strain on mental health resources. Local residents also face challenges related to housing, employment, and access to care.

By investing in mental health programs, Our Epic Project is helping to:

  • Increase access to counseling and support services

Many residents and workers face barriers such as cost, transportation, or stigma. These funds help reduce those barriers.

  • Provide tailored programs for specific groups

Programs like EPIC8 address workplace stress, while others focus on families, students, or individuals with mental illness.

  • Build community resilience

Strong mental health resources contribute to a healthier, more connected community that can better handle challenges.

  • Raise awareness and reduce stigma

Funding helps support education and outreach efforts that encourage people to seek help when needed.

What This Means for Outer Banks Residents and Businesses

The $30,000 investment in mental health programs is more than just funding. It represents a commitment to the well-being of everyone who lives, works, and studies on the Outer Banks. For residents, this means better access to support and resources that can improve quality of life. For businesses, it means a healthier workforce that can manage stress and perform at their best during the demanding summer months.

Local businesses can also play a role by:

  • Encouraging employees to use mental health resources

  • Partnering with programs like EPIC8 to support workplace well-being

  • Promoting awareness and reducing stigma around mental health in the workplace

Moving Forward Together

This summer funding marks a step forward in building a stronger, healthier Outer Banks community. By supporting mental health programs, Our Epic Project and the Outer Banks Community Foundation are helping ensure that residents, workers, and students have the resources they need to thrive.
