Each summer, thousands of young adults relocate to the Outer Banks to support the region’s tourism economy. While this workforce is essential to the community’s economy, it faces significant mental health stressors. Seasonal employees often live in crowded housing (sometimes up to 20 individuals per home), work long hours in high-pressure service roles, and are separated from their primary support systems. Many are unfamiliar with local healthcare and mental health resources and experience social pressure tied to party culture and burnout during peak tourism season. The majority of seasonal workers are between 18–25 years old—an age group nationally identified as having increased vulnerability to anxiety, depression, substance misuse, and isolation. Despite this, stigma and limited knowledge of resources prevent many from seeking help.
One connection. One conversation. Thats all it takes to be EPIC
At our EPIC Project we think we can fill this gap by utizing existing resources, education, technolgy and most importantly a sense of connection.
EPIC 8 will launch its pilot program on June 15, 2026 and it will run through August 15, 2026.
Designed to offer support and connection during the toughest 8 weeks of the OBX Tourist Season, EPIC 8 will be a welcome reasource for businesses, employees, and the community by connecting people with resources and support when they need it most.
Employers, teams, groups, and individuals can all benefit from the 8 week program. Each week EPIC8 will focus on one of the 8 dimensions of wellness. From some ideas on how not to blow all the money you made this summer, to ensuring you take care of yourself while you're here.
Weekly check-ins and challenges keep folks engaged and connected while ensuring education, resources, access and financial assistance are available for professional support when needed.
